Tecco’s planned research collaboration with UNSW focuses on a practical question: how can a building understand its spaces, devices and operating conditions well enough to support safer, more resilient and more energy-efficient decisions?
The proposed project, “AI-Enabled Spatial Intelligence for Safe, Resilient and Energy-Efficient Buildings”, sits within the research context of the ARC Research Hub for Fire Resilience Infrastructure, Assets and Safety Advancements (FRIASA).
A shared representation of the building
The research scope connects spatial information, IoT and device data, energy assets, environmental sensing and building automation. A structured, dynamic model is intended to make the relationships between those inputs available to monitoring, analysis and decision support.
Safety and energy in the same picture
Planned investigations cover anomaly detection, predictive maintenance, risk identification, distributed energy resources and building energy flexibility. The programme also examines how AI-derived understanding can be translated into deterministic responses constrained by context, capability and safety requirements.
From representation to a bounded response
A useful research system must connect what a building is with what is happening inside it. Spatial relationships provide context for sensor observations. Reasoning then needs to account for uncertainty and operational constraints before proposing a response. The research question extends beyond prediction to whether a decision is appropriate, explainable and useful in its building context.
A pathway from research to applications
The proposed schedule begins with requirements and evaluation design in November 2026, followed by data foundations, method development, application integration and validation through November 2030. Representative residential and commercial applications are intended to support evaluation and potential translation into Tecco’s technology environment, including Homira.
