POLICY / DESIGN DIRECTION

Privacy in a context-aware world

A system that understands a place also inherits a responsibility to limit what it collects and exposes.

Context has a purpose

Room structure, device state and behavioural signals should be tied to a defined task. Our research direction favours the minimum context needed for an outcome, with explicit boundaries between residents, projects and organisations.

Locality is an architectural choice

Some decisions benefit from local processing and continuity when connectivity is lost. Cloud and edge responsibilities should be selected for the use case, sensitivity and operating conditions rather than assumed to be interchangeable.

Make boundaries inspectable

Identity, access scope, retention and information crossing an interface need to be understandable to the people operating a system. Product-specific notices and controls must describe the actual implementation; a research principle is not a substitute for them.

These principles guide research and development. They are not a claim that every described control is available in every current product.
